Latest News on the Big Dig Disaster

On July 11, 2006, a twelve ton concrete slab fell from the tunnel ceiling on Interstate 90, under Boston, killing a passenger in a car.

This is the latest and perhaps most serious disaster in the ongoing saga of Boston's "Big Dig," the most expensive highway project in history, which placed surface roads under the City of Boston and Boston Harbor.  Since the project began twenty years ago, costs more than quintupled.  More than 2,000 leaks, falling debris, and other problems have plagued the privately designed, privately constructed, and privately inspected project.

The following news articles describe the history of the "Big Dig" project, the events of July 11, and the aftermath.
